LEARNING TO LOVE: NORMAL DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESSES presented by Lorraine Rose

Neuroscience has shown the explosion of development that takes place in the brain of the baby, and the growth of his or her capacity to form relationships and develop the ability to establish intimacy. These processes impact on all future relationships. This is the fascinating story of the normal development of the baby and child in the early years using infant mental health research, psychoanalytic literature, infant observation and neuroscience to understand how it all happens. A deep and clear understanding of these processes is the basis of all our clinical work in any and every setting!

Lorraine Rose is a psychologist, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and organisational consultant who has worked in private practice in Sydney for over 40 years.  Additionally, Lorraine has lectured in psychology training programs at University of New South Wales, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and the Australian Catholic University (Strathfield).   She has also worked with students in the NSW Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and been on the staff of Institute of Child and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.  Lorraine established and conducted Infant Observation seminars for many years in the Infant Mental Health program at the Institute of Psychiatry in NSW.

Her private practice work has included work with children, adolescents, adults and families.  A particular focus for many years was adults who had never bonded, needing intensive involvement over a number of years.  As a result of this Lorraine saw the need for preventative work and with Norma Tracey and Beulah Warren established the Parent Infant Foundation of Australia developing groups for mothers, fathers and babies.  She worked on a booklet with her colleagues called Sleep: for baby and family (Ligare Press) and wrote chapters in The Emotional World of the Premature Infant (Whurr Books).   A book for parents was written by Lorraine, Learning to Love: the developing relationships between mother, father and baby during the first year (ACER Press). As part of her training in groups she attended national and international conferences exploring small group and large group phenomena and the primitive processes that are aroused by the group.
