Peak Performance: Improvised Theatre Workshop with Nick Byrne

Why is it that I only perform at my best half-the-time? I keep trying different ways to warm-up….or not…., but why isn’t my fabulous warm-up a great predictor of my better performances?

In this workshop, Nick takes a different approach to how to do whatever it is you do do; before the show, in the wings mid-show, and onstage out-of-focus, to help you access a mindset that will see you perform at your peak a lot more often.

After being asked to work with Olympic athletes, and to help them to deal with off-field concerns positively, so that they were match-ready more consistently, Nick transferred his discoveries back to improv theatre in a nine-night course for Impro ACT. Adelaide will be next to hear about them!

Oh, and don’t worry, there will be plenty of scene-work to test the technique, during which Nick will share the latest ideas he’s been working on. Change the way you think before and during the show, rid yourself of unnecessary worries, and you’ll soon find that no matter what your choice of warm-up exercises, you’ll break the cycle of inconsistency, and expect to perform at your peak whenever you hit the stage.

Nick Byrne is Artistic Director of Australia’s International Festival of Improvisation, Improvention, and also of Canberra’s Impro ACT. He’s been teaching classes every week for over a decade, and been exposed to every style of improvisation imaginable at Improvention and beyond. Nick is the creator of a wide range of improvised show formats, including the ten-piece band drama, “Crescendo”, the long form drama that is an analogy for refugee stories, “The Displaced”, and an Adelaide favourite, “Sink or Swim”. He has taught in every state of Australia, as well as in Amsterdam, and later in 2016, has been invited to teach, direct, and perform at several European festivals, (public announcements pending). At Adelaide Fringe, Nick is premiering his new solo show, “Inspired” at the Port Dock Brewery Hotel, Feb 23-25, in a double bill which includes Caspar Schjelbred (Paris) in "Plan C”.
