MBM unleashes the swinging 60s with Alfie

Bill Naughton’s classic 60s play comes to Holden Street this October

Matt Byrne Media will set Adelaide swinging with its highly anticipated production of Bill Naughton’s naughty classic Alfie from October 7-24 at the Holden Street Theatres.

Producer/director/designer Matt Byrne, is delighted to get the rights to present the iconic play that spawned two major movie versions and launched Michael Caine to superstardom.

“Alfie the movie put Michael Caine on the map back in 1966 and he’s stayed there ever since!,” Byrne said.

“But Alfie the play was first presented on the London Stage back in 1963, well before the first film.

“So I am thrilled to give one of Adelaide’s finest actors, Marc Clement, the opportunity to create his version of Alfie Elkins in person and drive the women of Adelaide to distraction!”

The movie also inspired Burt Bacharach’s favourite song, Alfie, which was immortalised by the late Cilla Black. Bacharch will perform Alfie, live, at the Entertainment Centre, just around from Holden Street on the last ngiht of the Alfie Premiere season, October 24.

“The play follows the sexpolits of the libidinous Alfie Elkins, a modern day Don Juan seemingly without a conscience, whose narcissism and appetite for women knows no bounds,” Byrne said.

“Alfie lives life by his own code which involved lots of admirers, forthright opinions and little responsibility. He single-handedly sets the 60s in London swinging!”

Byrne said there was more to Alfie than just womanising, It’s a cautionary tale of a life lived without a moral compass, and he ends up lost.

“Life catches up with us all and we see Alfie forced to confront his constant infidelity, unexpected paternity and mortality.”

“Its wicked, it’s funny, it’s cheeky and it’s disturbing as Alfie starts losing his touch and constantly ask the audience … what’s it all about?”

The cast features a lineup of some of Adelaide’s top female performers, with Niki Yiannoullou as Siddie, Kristen Tommasini as Gilda, Kim York as The Doctor, Heather Riley as Lily, Bronwyn Ruciak as Flo, Anjali Sarma as Carla, Nadine Wood as Ruby, Victoria Morgan as Vy and Kacy Ratta as Annie.

The male ensemble features the ever-popular John Matsen as Joe, Reg Hamlyn as Humphrey, Nick Stagg as Sharpey, Daniel Knowles as Perc, Sean Hilton as Harry, Loccy Hywood as Lofty and Matt Byrne as Doctor Smith.

Alfie will run at Holden Street Theatres at 34 Holden Street, Hindmarsh from October 7-10, 14-17 and 21-24 at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. Matinees on October 17 and 24.
